Contemplative spiritual direction is a practice of sacred companionship where a trained guide helps an individual deepen their relationship with the divine through prayer and self-reflection. It involves a listening, prayerful conversation focused on the presence of God in daily life, often incorporating practices like contemplation, discernment, and stillness to foster spiritual growth and a richer prayer life. The director acts as a guide, not a therapist, by helping the individual explore their spiritual journey and discover God's presence in their experiences.
Key aspects of contemplative spiritual direction

• Sacred companionship: It is a supportive relationship where a person is accompanied as they explore their spiritual life.
• Focus on the divine: The central purpose is to deepen one's relationship with God or your internal wisdom and experience this presence and influence more fully.
• Listening and discernment: The process involves deep listening to the individual and helping them discern Wisdom's movement in their life through open-ended questions and moments of silence.
• Contemplative practices: It encourages prayer, meditation, journaling, and other contemplative practices to help develop a more contemplative attitude in life.
• Exploration of life: It is a space to bring all aspects of life, including joys, griefs, doubts, and transitions, to be explored in a spiritual context.
• Not therapy: It is distinct from psychological counseling or problem-solving, though it may lead to self-awareness and a healthier life.
What happens in a session?

• An individual meets with a director, often monthly, to talk about their spiritual life.
• The directee may bring topics for discussion, or the director might ask questions to help the directee explore their experiences and relationship with God.
• The conversation is a "holy conversation" where one can speak freely about their faith journey and spiritual life.
• Moments of silence or prayer may be incorporated into the session.
• The director reflects what they hear back to the directee to aid in their reflection and growth.
